Day 10

Yep, my sleeping pad has a slow leak and it is still going to be several days before I get to town to fix it.  Won’t be much fun sleeping without it.

Not to be outdone, the rain blew in last night and wind gusted up to 40 mph.  Our site was in a little grove so we were protected from the winds for the most part.  The tent held up well on both accounts.  Since we had some miles to get done we packed up in the rain in the morning.  It’s a sloppy, dirty, wet process.  Everything is muddy.

Our destination today is Carter Gap Shelter which is 12.5 miles.  First half of the day we hiked in rain and then it began to clear.

We entered the Nantahala National Forest and were rewarded with some great views that afternoon.

The highest peak we conquered today was Standing Indian Mountain at about 5,500 feet.

Met lots of people on the trail including ‘Cool Joe from New Bedford, Nightengale and No Heart, Chuckwagon, Summit, Tree  Trunk and others.  All were very friendly.

At the end of our day we were able to pitch and clean our tents without rain and they dried quickly😊. It was a dry and peaceful night.  We need to decide if we stick to our earlier plan of hiking 12 miles tomorrow and camp one more day before going into town or make a run for it and do 16 plus to get to town tomorrow.  There are some major peaks to conquer along the way.  We are hearing that a heavy rain storm is anticipated to start late tomorrow and continue into Sunday.

It will be a tough sleeping tonight without my pad.
