Disappointed and frustrated. I had started making plans for my continuation hike. The excitement was beginning to build toward my re-start in April.
I suffered the break on Angel Street while skiing with Deirdra and friends. I've been on that trail many times before. It happened so fast. Turning to my left it felt like my ski caught on something and then I was in full yard sale mode. Felt my knee give out and was unable to put weight on it after. A sled was needed to get me down the mountain, It wasn’t easy as it was steep and icy where I fell making it difficult to stabilize the sled. The ski patrol folks were awesome. This wasn't a sled ride I was looking forward to.
Loon has an Orthopedic Surgeon and X-ray machine at the mountain so they did the preliminary diagnosis there and sent me home to get the surgery done. Had the surgery on Wednesday, February 5 in the morning at Massachusetts General Hospital. They put in a plate and screws to put things back together. The Doc said that the meniscus also had to be repaired but that the ligaments, while strained, were not torn.
The biggest issue is the recovery time. No weight bearing in that leg for three months and then a gradual recovery after that. Can take 8 to 12 months maybe longer. So this year’s hike is over.
Focus is now on recovery and rehab. The goal is to fully recover and get ready for next year.
